Vectorworks for live event production design

Vectorworks Spotlight is the design platform behind concerts, broadcasts, festivals, theatre productions, corporate keynotes, and brand experiences — where lighting, scenery, audio, video, and rigging all have to land in the same room at the same time and look like one designed thing. This practice runs the full entertainment stack on top of it, with project-specific custom tooling refined per engagement.

Workflow stack

The stack

Vectorworks Designer plus the entertainment add-ons Braceworks, Vision, and ConnectCAD, alongside Lightwright for lighting paperwork. Cinema 4D and Redshift handle high-end rendering; Unreal Engine and NVIDIA Omniverse handle cinematic-grade pre-rendering. CAD runs on macOS and Windows; render and compute workloads run on Linux — each workload where it works best.

What the practice delivers

Lighting Design & the Data Chain

  • Lighting plots built on hybrid 2D/3D symbols with shared insertion points
  • Channel hookup, instrument schedule, equipment list, cable schedule, and cable pulls derived from the same drawing data
  • Lightwright paperwork sync via the built-in bidirectional XML data exchange
  • Data Tags surface field values directly on the plot

Previz: Vision and Showcase

  • Vectorworks Vision as the console-bonded programming visualizer — grandMA3 via MA-Net3, plus Art-Net and sACN live network input
  • Vectorworks Showcase in-application for designer-side iteration and client-facing review
  • DMX-driven device control, false-color rendering, animated fog, and projection simulation through Video Wall plug-ins
  • Cue programming resolved before anyone steps into the venue

Production Rigging & PE Handoff

  • Hoist tools with automatic bridle insertion, the Sidearm tool, and the Connecting Rigging Objects workflow
  • Braceworks Finite Element Analysis over the connected rigging system
  • Results export in DSTV, SCIA, and PDF for licensed structural engineers to review and certify
  • Practice context: ANSI E1.2, E1.4, E1.6-1, and E1.21 rigging and temporary-structure standards

Entertainment Power Planning

  • Spotlight's Power Planning palette: cable drawing, patching, breakouts, dimmer and distro assignments, phase loading
  • Schematic Distributor mode generates power schematics from the lighting plot data
  • Distributor Output Schedule worksheets expose breakout circuit loading

AV Signal Flow & Acoustics

  • ConnectCAD for HDMI, SDI, audio, network, and control circuits with cable-path optimization and rack layout
  • Acoustical modeling through 3D DWG export into AFMG EASE 5
  • L-Acoustics deployments flow through Soundvision into EASE 5 as a parallel path

BOM, Spares & Multi-PM Workflow

  • Equipment Lists, database-driven worksheets, and Data Tags drive BOM generation
  • Custom worksheet formulas track backup and spare equipment alongside primary inventory
  • Project Sharing supports concurrent multi-user editing for production-management coordination

Camera & Broadcast POV Tool

  • Built on Spotlight's stock Video Camera object with live simulated framing
  • Custom layer encodes vendor-accurate camera bodies, lenses, and gate masks from manufacturer specifications
  • Producers, directors, and DPs see realistic shot framing from each camera position before truck-out
  • Sightlines and shot composition resolved at the design table

Scenic & Free-Form Modeling

  • NURBS curves and surfaces, Loft Surface, Deform, and Extract for organic scenic geometry
  • Draped fabric, sculpted set pieces, and free-form shapes translate into simplified build schematics
  • Fabricators, scenic shops, and on-site crews build from the same model — no re-modeling, no lost detail
Render pipeline

Render-ready for any pipeline

The work flows out into every major rendering and visualization environment in use today, preserving parametric controls so cinematic-quality renders come out without rebuilding the model downstream.
  • Datasmith Direct Link — bidirectional in-flight synchronization with Unreal Engine and Twinmotion — material and scene overrides survive model updates.
  • USD for NVIDIA Omniverse — Universal Scene Description as the cross-platform path into Omniverse.
  • Native .c4d export — geometry, layers, classes, cameras, materials, and HDRI backgrounds pass cleanly into Cinema 4D and Redshift.
  • MVR and GDTF — DIN SPEC 15801 and DIN SPEC 15800 interchange for entertainment visualizers and consoles — Capture, Depence, WYSIWYG, grandMA3, ChamSys.
  • FBX, IFC, gbXML, DWG/DXF — general 3D, BIM, energy-analysis, and AutoCAD interchange.
Scope note

On rigging certification

Braceworks output is design-time evaluation, not certified engineering. Certified calculations are produced only by licensed structural engineers — the practice uses Braceworks for pre-handoff evaluation, and certification sits with the qualified engineers who consume the DSTV, SCIA, and PDF exports.
